Sleep Paralysis: Binaural Beats

When I opened a spirituality magazine at Dr. Seaverson’s office yesterday, the first full-page ad was from the Monroe Institute in Virginia and described their “Hemi-Sync” (hemispheric synchronization) music recordings, also called binaural beats. I have loved those for awhile, Sabine introduced me to them in Santa Fe, but I did not know that they are designed to synchronize brain hemispheres.

So last night I found one I liked on the Insight Timer app on my phone, and then another on YouTube Red. I was listening in bed with my earbuds on, and fell into sleep paralysis. Which is not unusual, I have experienced that since childhood, but this time there was no imagery associated with the paralysis. All I saw were flashing lights, mostly blue and white. Electrical currents were mildly shocking my body. It was quite difficult to extricate myself from the paralysis, and even after I had, I could still feel the effect of the electrical waves. I fell immediately into normal sleep, and dreamt all night.

Waking Dream: Healing Birch

Birch Deva
Birch Deva

(Saturday, June 4, 2016) new moon Gemini / tarot: ten of wands reversed

Yesterday morning I went to my intro appointment at a holistic dentist in Hopkins, Tooth By The Lake. When waiting in the lobby I was delighted by the magazines: no golf or glamour pubs, but magazines about yoga, health and spirituality. I picked up a magazine on spirituality (I wish I could remember the title as I have never seen it before). I started to read an article describing the healing properties of birch water, which is tapped in the spring, the same time as maple sap. I have such an affinity for the beautiful birch. Three varieties grow in my yard: white paper, river and red birch. A favorite memory is of the time as a child I used to cross country ski at Springbrook Nature Center, near where I grew up. There was a path that ran between a birch forest on one side and an oak forest on the other. That felt sacred.

I was called by the hygienist before I was able to finish reading about the healing properties of birch water. But, amazingly, the long hallway leading to the dental stations was covered in wallpaper patterned like a birch forest. All of the photos and art on the walls were of birch trees!

I had a long and detailed interview with Dr. Seaverson. We created a year-long schedule, including financing, so that all of the mercury fillings I have had since childhood can be removed. He gave me two books about mercury and holistic dentistry. I left his office feeling like a healing is on its way for me.

Waking Dream: Great Horned Owl

(Thursday, June 2, 2016) moon: waning crescent Taurus / tarot: four of cups

Last night I was sitting in bed after dark, watching the sparkle of the fireflies in the small woods by our pond. A giant bird flew very close to my window, in complete silence. So I presumed it to be one of the Great Horned Owls that have lived in our yard for years. Once during a full moon I saw owl sitting in the lawn, casting a long, majestic shadow: a ghostlike apparition, completely magical and unforgettable. We hear them softly hoo-hooing during their winter mating season, usually in February.

I was so moved by the silence and the size of the bird I mentioned it to Chris when I came home today. “Oh,” he said, “owl left a feather for you on the front step.”

Sure enough. It’s the third owl feather we have found on our property, and the most perfect.
