Hurricane

(December 12, 2009)

We are at the coast of a cold ocean. Maine or New England.  It is a rocky coast with many small bays and islands. The water is dark grey and still, very deep. Frightening. It almost has a sound, like a very low ship’s horn. A sound you hear with your inner ears, with your belly. We have to be cautious with our footing. We are gathering specimens for a science study.

I receive a warning. There is a giant hurricane forming off the coast of France. It is so large that it will arrive in a matter of hours, not days. Somehow I can see the actual storm from space, spinning clockwise, enormous. We have some teammates in Florida who are planning to go up in a plane to conduct some experiments. We try to get word to them to take cover. We need to get warning out to ships and planes in the Atlantic. It seems hopeless.
